Artist Statement

"As an artist, I am deeply inspired by the powerful influence of music and value the strong connection that music has to the body’s most natural form of expression, dance. Moreover, I feel that it is critical when creating a work of choreography, one draws upon both the external and internal influences surrounding an individual to surface a narrative that the audience, dancer, and choreographer can empathize with. Movement has the incredible ability to captivate an individual’s emotions in a way that allows them to feel in the present moment. As such, it is my desire as an artist to create works that are accessible to all participants, both spectators and performers. For this reason, I find myself drawn to a movement that is simplistic and delicate, being influenced by balletic and sustained qualities which encompass an emotive lyrical attribute through core and arm initiation, as well as balance. Additionally, mentioned lyrical qualities are encouraged by characterizing music through indulging in both sustained and contrasting musical approaches."

"With this emphasis on music, I am passionate about percussive dance forms that allow for complex rhythmic configurations for both structured and improvisational movement. Only when a dancer learns to move with the music do they truly begin to dance. There are moments as a choreographer where I enjoy accompanying movement motifs with music that portray a literal meaning, which I usually draw upon when a specific narrative is envisioned. However, there are other times when I feel that it is important for others to gain a personal connection, and to have an individual experience with my work. When moments like these arise, group collaboration is my inspiration. I believe in the power of community and have found that the most successful choreographic occasions arise when I cooperate with the creative minds around me to create something meaningful."
